throttle cable

While the bike is running at idle in neutral, I grab the throttle cable about an inch or two away from the handle grip and move it around about 3 to 6 inches in all directions. When I do this, the engine revs up as if I were twisting the throttle but my hand is completely off the throttle. I guess for the price I should just replace the cable. Would that do it or is there an easier way to handle this?

Sounds like it's not mounted properly... is it screwed in firmly at the throttle? There's an adjuster somewhere around where it sounds like your grabbing it, is that engaged enough that it's not allowing the two halves of the cable to separate? Are the two nuts tightened properly on the bracket that joins the carbs attached to the diaphragm covers?

The throttle cable is tight where it mounts to the bracket on the carbs. The cable adjustment that you were talking about near the twist grip is tightened all the way and appears the be joining the cable to the throttle properly. Unless a small portion of the cable sheathing has to go into this area before tightening. I am in the process of searching some parts diagrams now to make sure the previous owner didn't do a poor job on a cable replacement.

Cool, that sounds like a good start. You'll also need to undo the right switch block to make sure it's seating correctly and is in the cable channel correctly etc.

I spent the day cleaning the front brake, the caliper and piston. Good news is it works like a champ now and the front wheel spins freely as it didn't before. I checked the throttle cable adjustment where it comes out of the handgrip a little more closely and its cracked inside. That would explain the erratic idle as soon as I turned the handlers! Time to look for a replacement.
