translate the shift pattern stamp *stupid noob ?*

I have not got to ride my GS450 since I got it 2 weeks ago and figure this out on my own because I have been out of town and I'm working on the carbs.

when I got the bike home I saw this stamped on the side of the trans and I have a question is there a special way to shift other than kicking it up 1-6 then back down? What is this attempting to tell me?

sorry I'm new and trying to learn
    Thanks!

That's how your gearchange works. Down one prod to 1st, back up through neutral to 2nd, then up through the gears to 6th. To get back to neutral you have to shift down through each gear again - it's not like a car where you can shift the stick back in to the middle from any gear.

    79 GS1000S (another one)
    80 GSX750
    80 GS550
    80 CB650 cafe racer
75 PC50 - the one with OHV and pedals...
75 TS100 - being ridden (suicidally) by my father

I think that Mr Suzuki was trying to help us idiots back then trying to come to terms with a LH gear change or all the gears not being straight down as we swapped over from our ancient BSAs. That little diagram didn't help us then either!

Is that showing a chain and sprockets as final drive?
            The thing in the middle?
