Exhaust mod question/idea
So I am having issues getting the H connector pipe to seal right. It was brought to my attention why not just get rid of it all together? Just cut it off and weld it shut. I have the correct welder to do that too. I was told its to eliminate noise? Is that all? Just wanted to check with you guys before I cut anything. It shouldn't need to re jet correct? The crossover really didn't have anything to do with noise I don't think. I seem to remember reading it was done to balance pulses/back pressure across the cylinder or something to that effect? The early bikes (77-79 750/850) didn't have a crossover to begin with. The crossover DID change the sound of the pipes a bit. I prefer the smoother "whoosh" of the non crossover pipe over the burble of those with it.
The best way to do this would be to cut the pipes with the crossover section off prior to the crossover, and then using some exhaust tubing picked up from your autoparts store, plumb them straight into the "Y" pipe joining the other pipes to the muffler section. Steve did a write up on this including pics...a search should bring it up.

Second, not all the crossovers are the same. If you look at the link above, you will see that the crossover on the 850 (maybe some other bikes, too) are actually H-pipes that can be replaced very easily with NO welding.
