    whats this hole for ?

hello.this is my first post here but ive been reading over the site for a month or so.anyhow i bought a 1983 gs450ga.it has really high mileage but runs pretty strong. looks like the po didnt do any of the maintnance. i was riding around the block to see where my seepage was coming from.when i got home there was oil all over my kick stand.the seepage is at the front of the engine and is minimal.this oil was coming out of a small hole on the left side of the case that looks like it needs a plug or something.its a vertical hole with smooth curved in sides.i cant seem to find it on parts lists.any help would be much appreciated.thank you

It's the Mystery Hole. Do a search with that term for more info! There's a drain hole under your starter so that the starter cavity doesn't fill up with water in the rain. The Mystery Hole is where this drain hole exits.

If oil is coming from your Mystery Hole, you likely need to replace the o-ring on the nose of your starter, or perhaps the oil is coming from further up, such as the cam chain tensioner or oil pressure sensor.

Do NOT plug the Mystery Hole.

              Greetings and Salutations!!

              Hi Mr. laviathine,

Check that your petcock is operating properly. If it leaks, gasoline can make its way past the cylinders and into the crankcase oil causing an over-fill condition and diluting your oil. When you start the engine it can come squirting out of several places. You'll want to go through the maintenance lists in your "mega-welcome". Skipping any steps or taking shortcuts will cause much frustration and catastrophic failures.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

That's nothing! My 83 GS1100E has 39k on it and runs awesome! I did about 12k last season. Could have done more, but I parked her to rebuild the front forks.
