80' 450L Tachometer cable leak
I am getting a small amount of what I would assume is oil leaking from where the tach cable runs into the engine. The fitting seems to be tight. Any suggestions?Tags: None

There's an oil seal in there that's probably had it.
You should be able to remove the housing and tach. drive without removing the valve cover which will allow you to replace the seal, but getting it back in and seated correctly could be an interesting challenge.
You need to be very careful when putting it back in that it is seated correctly or you will potentially damage the teeth driving it on the exhaust camshaft.
The safest way of course is to remove the valve cover and release the tension on the exhaust camshaft just enough to be able to see that it seats correctly.
The seal's dirt cheap, try www.boulevardsuzuki.com and you'll see it on the parts fiche easily enough.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Finally got my seals from GS Suzuki, (only took a month). It was very easy with the tutorial on BassCliffs site.
Only thing that happened out of the ordinary was the cable came unattached from its fitting. I pulled the fitting down and noticed that the sheathing had come "unscrewed" from the fitting.
Screwed the fitting back on the cable sheathing, put the new rings on, and reasmbled everything. All works as it should now, but ive got a question. When the sheathing came unattatched from the fitting, black oil came out, maybe a couple teaspoons. do I need to replace that oil, or was that just excess from the PO lubing them? Is the cable now bad and need to be replaced?
Also the old seals looked okay to me, is possible they just shrunk over time, giving me the leak

As far as I know the fitting is basically crimped over the cable, and it needs to be lubed to work well.
If you can get it crimped back on properly I'd just squirt some more lube down there and call it good.
You'll know soon enough if it works or not...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
