    Clutch not disengaging GS300

    Trying to get this bike back up to par after sitting for unknown amount of years. I think the clutch plates maybe stuck together and the clutch lever is very difficult to pull in even after lubing. any ideas?

    Did a clutch adjustment according to the manual and nothing worked. should I open the right side case and see if they are stuck together and if so pry them apart?

    I do not know much about Jap bikes since I've only work on my old harley, but being they are two different beasts I want to see what you guys would do first.

    You may find it just needs to be warmed up/ridden a bit to free them up...

      Definitely open up the clutch cover and have a look at the disks. You can do this without draining the oil if you leave the bike on the sidestand and not the centerstand.

      Dollars to donuts, they are glomed together. Since you are in there you can measure your springs, check the thickness of your fiber disks and check all the disks for "trueness" by laying them flat on a pane of glass. That will show if any are warped, which would ,of course, necessitate changing out. Have a look too at the "tangs' (teeth) of the basket for any signs of gouges on the inner surfaces which can hang up the disks. You can file smooth any you find. Relube each disk with frsh oil as you reassemble.

      Once it is all back together, but before you put the cover on, adjust your cable and check to see the disks "part" as you squeeze it in. If they all move apart smoothly, you are good to go.

        Take the rubber plug off the side of the engine down by the shifter. squeeze the clutch and see if that silver screw moves at all. If not then it is likely your clutch cable needs to be serviced or replaced.

          It does move but it also pushes out the cover a tiny bit when the cable is pulled. I'm going to order a new cable anyways since this one is fraying at the handle.

          And thank you for the advice. I'll post back once i have time to check the clutch basket.

            Its pushing on the cover?

            Have you taken the cover off? You will need a 10mm wrench and an 8mm socket. There could be some sort of debris in there preventing the clutch rod from actuating or the clutch rod itself isn't seated somehow. Also take us along on your adventure with some pictures it will help us help you

              clutch springs

              it's definitely the clutch springs. I took the plates apart wiped the fibers and removed the corrosion on the steel plates with some scotch brite pads.

              The plates and steels are all in good condition but the clutch springs are measuring in at about 30.5mm each and the manual says the service limit is 33.x

              I pulled the clutch lever in while the springs where out and it travels freely and doesn't feel like it's got debris in the way.
