    Valve noise with video

    Its been doing this off and on. Mostly when its cold. Any ideas? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJyBWh9SDWg

    Does it go away if you slowly increase engine speed above about 1500?

    If so, it sounds like what we call "cam walk". Get used to it, ignore it. It won't get any worse.
    It won't go away without copious amounts of cash thrown at it.

      Need the experts to chime in for sure but it sounds to me like the cam walk these GS' can get.

      Essentially there's a little bit of side play in the cam shafts and they "walk" side to side as they idle.

      I don't think it's drastic but I'd really prefer someone a little more experienced with this to chime in...

        I thought that's what it was but I've only ever heard it once on another 450 in 1998 when I first bought mine...

          It wouldn't hurt to pull the cam chain tensioner and make sure the plunger is springing out smoothly just to be sure. Could be cam walk as other suggest, but I have no personal experience with that specific noise so I'd cover all the bases, including verifying the valve adjustment.

            Other than that, I have a bike that has sounded like that for more than 15 years and 70-80,000 miles.

              Definitely cam walk. Can be fixed but requires machining of the head for inserts to stop the cam's from having so much end play. Once they spin up enough the cam's self center.
              When one lobe moves down and presses against a valve on one side it slides the cam towards the other side. Then when the other lobe comes around it gets pushed back the other way.
