    Here's what it looks like when...

    Here's what it looks like when a nut comes off a connectiong rod on the bottom of a 1983 Suzuki GR650 Tempter...



    Notice the blackened metal on the crankshaft..



    This is the inside of the rod showing the bearing damage..



    The two connectiing rods side by side, with the left being the damaged rod and the right being the undamaged rod with the bearing still in it..

    So the rebuild begins. This bike was bought without a working starter and the PO saying..quote..."the engine has a small ticking sound..."..after installing a new used starter...the knocking was obvious.

    I guess I was too trusting...

    Well that sucks. You got a line on a new crank and rod? There is one on ebay for about $130 shipped.

      well at leat it didnt break and make a big hole in the cases.
      Look on the bright side as that may be the only one.

        I already have a crank but the rods I had been watching on ebay are gone now except for 2 for $89. I had a devil of a time getting the cases apart so didn't want to buy them until I was sure of what I would find inside the engine.

        To make a long story short, I stripped the head of the very last bolt to be removed. After 3 weeks of talking to machine shoops, etc and I was able to weld a small bolt onto the damaged bolt and impact it off.

        But I always wanted to try an engine rebuild and I think a 2 cylinder would be easier for the first try than a 4 cylinder.

            Thought you'd like the pics. Now I'm piecing together/buying all the gaskets, new connecting rod, etc so I can start the rebuild. Should be interesting.

              Whats the specs on the rod.

              Big end size
              small end size
              rod length from center to center

              I think the 400's and 500's might have a commonality here.


              What does the rod look like when you take the bearing out ?

                Hey Mekanix, The second and third pictures show the bad rod with the bearing out of it. As for the sizes of the rod, I haven't done any measurements yet, but a search on Alpha Sports for any other compatible bikes that could possibly share this rod only shows the Tempter as being usable.

                I think that is because the Tempter, being a 650 engine size and having a different type domed piston head, leaves it pretty unique as compared to other engines.

                          I picked up a used motor complete for $50 on Craigslist, and with mix 'n matching, my 450 is back on the road and running great!

                            Tkent02 and Big D 83... a new used engine was also my first thought but being they were only sold her in America for 1 year, they're just not that common. And the running ones for sale are a bit pricey...around $1000 to $1600 the last I looked.

                            Big Rich...I understand you have a few of these...maybe you could give a fellow GSR member a break?...Just kidding.

                            Kirkn...when I saw that pic in your thread of the bent rod I called both my boys in and showed them. I think they both actually felt some pain just looking at it.

                            I will find the parts I need and I will get this thing rebuilt but it may be a while. When I finally get everything together and start the rebuild, I will start a new thread.

                            ANY advice, help or words of caution on engine rebuilding would be greatly appreciated.
