Bike doesn't want to fire just cranks forever.

Today i finally got my rebuilt carbs on and was hoping for the best. It cranked right up immediately so i decided to take it down the street. Bad idea... didn't get 100 yards and the bike just stops. COMPLETELY. wont even crank over anymore.

then as i was investigating the clicking noise from the starter it began to smoke and the negative terminal started becoming cherry red so I cut the cable. The starter is VERY hot but still spins when bench tested. Could my starter have shorted out?

im afraid to re connect everything as it may cause a fire.

Good thinking ! just what/ where "negative cable" became "cherry red" ?

Golly gee it looks like someone did not lock down the threaded adjusters properly.

These parts are probably in the sump and may not have damaged anything.

I would pull the sump pan and look for them aftre fully checking for the its among the valve-train components.

The chain is done for but its a roller chain that can be retrofitted with a riveted type to avoind a opening the cases.

Can you check the manual and see if the timing has jumped a tooth on the sprockets?

I see no tragedy in these pictures.

Its a gs300L Very similar to the 400 with shorter stroke and smaller bore. Head is pretty close to 400 component and design wise.

              Jeep, check this out

Biggest worry at the moment is possible damage to the lower sprocket.
Adjusters ended up between the chain and sprocket

It must have happened at speed by the looks of it.
