And the question:
I have a spare complete head that looks good and I was told it smoked on startup so I'm going to tear into the head anyways....
Should I use it since I'm going to have it apart or deal with this mess

I would go with the new head.....and try to get those bolts out just in case. But YMMV.
I can't remember the differences in years......but "new" 500 heads have an electronic tach. Just Fyi.

+1 on Rich's comment, go with the new head, but get those bolts out.

That's the closet in my apartment Pete. I work with what I have.
I have new valve seals, So I'm going to replace them regardless of condition. The new head was from a younger engine with a bad rod and its still the old type with tach gear. I'm wondering how deep I want to go into the engine.
It has 88000 on it So the head is the first thing I'll be into but I'm wondering about the rings and bearings.
That would mean I need rings @ 53$ each and bearing shell's @10 a half and then gaskets.
I couldn't get the bolt out of the front engine mount. So I had to drill the head off and soon cut it off so I can drill that part out of the engine.
No way this bolt is moving.Stephen.

Closet!!?? Wow that's a big closet! Haha
I wouldn't be too worried about the mileage... my 450 had over 96000km's on it when I pulled it down and it was clean as a whistle inside. Everything measured in spec. I only replaced seals and rings etc. because I had it apart.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

lol Its either I work in there or outside its -15c without windchill!
The only reason I'm concerned about the bottom end is that the whole bike seemed to be hacked.
I mean there was a wood screw holding the timing chain tensioner in

I also scored a GS500 ignition for it.

Score! What'd that set you back? eBay deal or somewhere else?
I'm tempted to keep my eye out for one just in case the Dynatek gives up the ghost... but having said that I *really* like not having a separate ignitor module to locate anywhere. I really do like the self contained Dynatek unit...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Got a decent deal on the Dynatek unit for mine. Are you gonna finish that up before the Gs500 project? I want to hear what it sounds like!

As soon as Ray sends me the head back ill get to it but for now ill probably have this one finished before that.
I got the parts from a guy on kijiji that made one bike out of two so there was lots of extra parts I got for a good price.Stephen.
