GS425 cam chain tensioner - how screwed am I?
I read and saw how removing this made removing the carbs way easier, so I did. Two bolts, and it was out - piece of cake! Now I just stumbled on a video that says I was supposed to loosen the set nut on the left side first, then crank the screw it surrounds all the way in. then you tighten the nut back to hold this (adjustment?) screw in that position. All this should have been done BEFORE you pull the tensioner. So ... NOT doing this first, what happened, and how screwed am I? The engine has not turned since I did this, and I did not want to open up the engine at all when I start reassembling the bike.Tags: None

Wow, thanks for the quick response Tom. So it doesn't sound like I'm too screwed. I'll dig my tensioner out of the box and try this soon!

I have not worked on a 425, but on all the other bikes on which I have worked, you had to remove the carbs to even get to the tensioner.
I am having difficulty understanding how removing the tensioner first makes the carbs easier.
Yes, you only have to reset the tensioner before installation and you will be fine. Tom gave the correct procedure, but I would like to clarify one point: after installation, loosen the setscrew 1/2 turn and tighten the lock nut (as properly described) but make sure the setscrew is held in that "1/2 turn out" position, not turned in tight.
