1980 GS400 engine dimensions.

Good day all,

I am looking for the overall engine dimensions of a GS400.

I need to Length, and width and Height of the motor itself (not the entire bike)

I have a custom frame project that I am working on, and I want to use a GS400 motor but I need to confirm if it will fit with these dimensions.

From what I have been told, the 400 Engine is pretty much the same as the 425 and 450, so if anyone has dimensions for those engines I would appreciate them as well!

well, we'll see,eh... you can ask for a specific measure. I'm just putting something down quick so you can see if you can get further.



OK, measure number
1=20.5 inches. This is from bottom of sump to the top of Valve/cam cover

2=15.5 inches is what it is.Motor mounting is pretty much inside this measure...

3=2.25 inches ..that is the sump dropping between the frames so the height on line 1 as it might fit your frame is reduced to 18.25"

the otherside of the engine is more "spacious" as regards the frame.

4= 23 inches this is me trying to find the very longest diagonal. Always seems useful, but not sure why.

Now, Front and widths...Unpictured because unfortunately I haven't any engines out of the frame but can show you lots of obscured pictures if they help...I'll try to describe for now.

Widths

at the base of the cylinder the engine is 12 inches this doesn't include the protrusions of stator and clutch-it's just a imagineer measure to picture the bulk of it...
at the top of the valve/cam cover is 10 inches

oil sump fitting between the lower frame ...
the sump is 7 inches wide
the frame is ~8 inches wide there.

extra stuff

the sump is 6.25 inches long
