    Clutch problem

Hi all, can anyone shed some light on my clutch problem? 1982 gsx 400 t, new cable, adjusted
as the manual but on pulling away at the bite point it is difficult to release smoothly. The last
1/4" is stiff and makes it difficult to start from rest and easy to stall.

    Thanks in advance.

given the cable is routed correctly and runs smooth yada yada maintenance, The clutch on these is pretty commonly engaging in that last 1/4"....a little more slack at the handlebar adjuster willl just move the contact area a bit on the "pull" and then, also, you may have trouble disengaging clutch completey. More revs and a finer hand may see you through until you get to fancier solutions...rebuilds and all that may not improve it much at all. If the clutch is not slipping it is probably ok. I think if they'd built more leverage and therefore "travel" in, it would be better but this comes down to the design overall.

If it's like my wife's 450 it should have an adjustment on the cover where cable enters side of engine cover. Should be smaller cover with couple of screws, remove the screws and should see screw with lock nut inside. Loosen locknut and turn screw in till you feel it stop, then back out 1/4 to 1/2 turn back out and hold there while locking nut back. terrylee

Had some time over the weekend an have found the problem. After re adjusting the
cable I checked the rod release mechanism inside the side cover, all seemed to be
working ok but I squeezed some grease inside, refitted and now have a silky smooth
        operating clutch. Result.

yes, thanks! many people do not. I've never noticed improvement by greasing that, so it didn't occur to me to suggest it. Cable binding I have had though, so it comes to mind quickly.
