    83 650 tempter

My 83 gr650 was running perfect until a month ago. While riding on the freeway, it just cutoff while riding. Pushed it off to the exit ramp. Was able to restart it but it was running very poor/ sluggush. Nursed it back home. It would not accelerate and was very difficult to start. I recently took the bike to highly recommended mechanic in the area. His diagnosis was a sticky/frozen float needle. He replaced said needle and said it was good to go. I picked it up and took it home. Went for a test ride and it seemed great until I hit 50 mph Same symptoms returned. Stalled out when I stopped . It started back up but and was accelerating sluggush again. That's where I'm at. Looking for any info/help. Giving the mechanic another shot before I go some where else. Thanks in advance or any help.

The GR650 had some troubles with their timing chains. I hope this is not the problem, as I hear they are a real pain to change.

Member Big Rich is as close to an expert on the GR650 as anyone could be on this forum.

. The consequence of this diagnosis would be running on one cylinder. aka "running very poor/ sluggush"

You should first confirm that "running on one cylinder" is indeed the case and go from there. Your mechanic likely found something wrong and fixed it. He may have been correct or maybe something else is wrong, causing the dropout of one cylinder.

given a missing cylinder Some Other carb issue , or Ignition failure or even maybe (but less likely) valves stuck (if the motor is not an interferenc type) on one side.... are possibilities.
So you will have to go a bit deeper. That's not unusual, to not fix things on first try.

I have a GR650 and I find that the only major difference between the GR and GS in terms of engine is 2 cylinders vs 4 cylinders. The carbs are basically operate the same and have the same electrical gremlins...

Could be the fuel petcock is going bad. That is easy to check. But most likely electrical or carbs.

and, you could see if the carb bowl where mechanic fixed stuck float actually has gas in it by removing bottom screw of bowl. likely that's how the diagnosis was arrived at. ..
Sometimes though, the bowl gasket itself can do it...an aftermarket replacement perhaps...

Don’t assume its just one problem. I broke down last year on a T250 due to a collection of little issues that added up.

Had to ride my GR home on one cylinder when a spark plug failed. It did this without any fuss. Sounds like a problem effecting both cylinders.

Possibly a plugged gas cap vent.
