    clutch rattle at idle in neutral ?

    I just bought a 79 gs 1000 and it has a rattle coming from the clutch only below 1500 rpm and in neutral ? If you engage the clutch even at idle it goes away or if you raise the rpm. When I feel the clutch linkage at case with my hand when the noise in happening it feels like the basket is loose or something is out of balance? Any ideas?

    Two causes, the big hub nut is loose, or the springs in the back of the basket are loose.
    Pop the clutch off and find out which, it's easy stuff.

      Sounds great and what I thought. Are the springs something you replace like clutch springs or are they able to be tightened by adjusting them? I was planning on getting some barnet clutch springs for the clutch aswell since I here the clutch plates wear like iron but the spring will loose tension from being compressed for so many years. Are those the same springs your talking about or different springs? Thanks

        Just get stock springs, unless you are setting up a race bike, they don't slip until they get very old. The springs in back of the basket are not the same ones that put pressure on the plates. Let me see if I can find something...

        Here you go, these springs can cause the rattle:


        But first, check the nut, if you are running around with it loose that could be very bad.

                It was the bolt in the middle to hold the clutch on it was loose. I tightened it and noise is gone but was wondering how to hold the clutch assembly properly to tighten it to 35 to 50 ft lbs without damaging it. I stuch a scewdriver between the alum posts to hold it but don't think I got that much torque on it but will check it tomarrow with torque wrench. (it's at work) Clutch looked good but now need a gasket aswell. Thanks again

                  I was wondering the same thing. I had a thought that maybe the back wheel could be solidly on the ground and the bike in 5th or something like that... please don't say the words "special tool"...

                    Put the bike in 5th gear and stand on the rear brake, and tighten the nut.
