81 GS1000 friction plates in a 79
Hi, is it possible to use the friction plates from a 81-83 gs1000 in a 79-80 gs1000? It shows that the 81 uses 9, while the 79 uses 8, are they just thinner, or is there a real difference? I only wonder because barnett lists a complete kit for the 81, but just individual parts for the 79. Thanks for the help.Tags: None

Don't get a Barnett clutch for it.... Either buy stock or just get a set from www.z1enterprises.com.
The friction plates don't usually wear out either. Most slippage can be cured by fitting new springs & scuffing up the steels with some wet & dry paper.

1000 chain drive 8v. have larger diameter clutch plates...both steel and fibers.
the 1000/1100 8v. shaft bikes has the same clutch plates as 80-82 1100 16v. and
84-86 1150's.
the 1000 8v. chain bikes have larger plates because they have a thinner basket that holds less plates than the 16v. bikes.
this is why the shafty 8v. bikes baskets won't fit in the chain models..to wide to fit into the cases.

Barnett clutches
Is there something particularly wrong with barnett clutches? Thanks for the advice.

you can run negative free play in the cable and even run stock springs but its not worth the trouble.
they are thinner and have a steel backing plate which will cut up the inside of your basket and make it junk.
so what do ya think?
