    Weight of rear wheel

    Is there anyone out there that would happen to know the weight of the 17" rear wheel? With the disk and splines or with out would be a big help on my weight watchers project.

    Now that wasnt nice... I meant the bike, not the rider.

    I am looking at a few different Suzuki 17" wheels, and I am trying to find the lightest one. I think the Stock 17" on the `80 gs might be king in this case.

    The spoked alloy rim wheels from the Gs 1000 are the lightest unless you go aftermarket mag and most of those prob won't hold air after this many years

        The '82+ wheel is tubeless, although some of the early star mags were tubeless too although it's more of a crap shoot.

            You might want to be more specific: you want the weight of the early 17" wheel and the later, second generation, wheels?

              I didnt realize there was a difference. I would take any info I can get. Whats the difference? Is one lighter than the other?

                I don't know which one is lighter but I suspect the later type based on the spoke design. Also, as already mentioned, you should get a tubeless wheel since that will save the weight of a tube, which is not trivial.

                  This old photo of my GS850G shows the later style tubeless wheels, found on '82+ shafties:


                  Note how the spokes don't "cross".

                  In case you didn't already know, the GL and GK models all have 16" rear wheels, and the G models all have 17 rear wheels. There also may be minor differences between early and late models in the rear brake disk and spacing, which can usually be resolved with a few washers.

                    I wonder if the 83 650 Katana rims were any lighter. These are similar to the 83 and later 6 spoke design but made for shaft drives. I couldn't locate a picture to illustrate. I don't know if they used them on any other shaft models, I think most of the bigger models used the style like Bwringer's.

                    Anyways, they would be pretty scarce. A guy in my hometown had one that I would cruise by to admire from time to time. Unfortunately, someone stole it about a year ago. It wasn't in great shape, but it did have the mini console windshield that was unique to it.
