Has anyone found a chemical that softens the cylinder base gasket so it's possible to remove ? My gasket is on a 30 year old GS 1000 G and it's almost welded to the cylinder base. It's impossible to get a knife or scraper into it so it has to be softened/dissolved with something.

Paint stripper is very similar to chemical gasket remover, only cheaper. It will take several applications, with scraping in between, but eventually it will come off.Ed
To measure is to know.

I used some Permatex brand gasket remover. I applied it heavy, then waited a couple hours. Scraped right off with minimal effort, came out nice and clean. No gouges from the razor blade, either.
