    clutch plates

Trying to get to the clutch plates off 81 450. On it you have to remove advance governor in order to get the side cover off to get to the clutch. But even with the bike in gear and rear brake on, the advance wants to turn backward when trying to loosen the bolt. I'm afraid this might mess up something in the engine if I turn it very much counterclockwise. Any ideas? Also should I be taking off the small bolt on top or larger one behind it to remove advance governor.

I don't understand what the advance unit has to do with removing the clutch hub nut other than the fact that the crank turns when trying to remove the nut.

You need a way to hold the clutch hub while removing the nut. You can make a tool out of an old steel clutch plate - weld on a lever arm you can hold. I'd also seen people that made a tool by bolting together a drive and driven plate together. At any rate, the service manual should detail what needs to be done in terms of what to hold and from there it's up to you too buy or make a tool.

On the 450 according to the manual because the 450 doesn't have separate covers for the signal genator and advance governor, and then one for clutch, it's all the same cover. So I have to take signal gen. off and then advance gov. to get the sidecover off to get to the clutch. I know my 850s are not this way, so I'm not use to doing all this. I just don't want to mess something up inside the motor by having the advance gov. turning counterclockwise while trying to break the bolt loose. Putting it in gear and holding the rear brake is what the manual says to do, but it still wants to turn when I try to loosen bolt. terrylee

Hey I got governor off! Didn't realize all I had to was hold large nut you use when doing valve adjust. and then break small bolt loose. So tomorrow I will take off cover and get to clutch plates! Hopeful all I'll need to do is clean them. terrylee

I would replace the clutch springs while it is apart
