    Downshifting Issues - Wierd

Hi again everyone: Well, the charging issues are behind me and the bike has the oil leak sorted out. For about a week everything was absolutely perfect and the old 83 GS1100 ES ran like new.

    Until yesterday.

The bike shifts up through the gears without a hitch. On downshift, the problems start. The bike seems to go to the lower gear, then slides to neutral. This occurs every gear down to 2nd. 5 to 4 has done it, but especially 4 down to 3. If you keep pressure on the shifter pedal when down-shifting, and then add throttle (which puts pressure onto the gear) it seems to help it hold.

I took it to the dealer, who thinks it may be in the shifter arrangements. There is a detent and spring and a whole mess of parts in behind the clutch but outside of the actual area that would require the case be split open that he thinks may have weak or broken springs and possibly worn or bent / broken parts. He does not believe it is in the gears, since there are no horrible grinding noises present, and the up-shift works just fine. He mentioned the Stopper Arm and the detent and spring in that area.

Mileage is just north of 40,000 km.

Any opinions? Other thoughts on what the cause might be?
