    0 Clearance Valves

I just checked my valve clearances, and the only feeler gauges I have 0.038, 0.-56, 0.064, 0.076, and 0.102. I was just wondering is it possible to have no clearance. This is the clearance of my gauges.

    Handle bars
    0.076-0.102 <0.038 <0.038 0.102-0.127
    <0.038 0.064-0.076 <0.038 <0.038

Because i don't have any feeler gauges less than 0.038 can i assume that if i get a shim that is 0.04mm smaller than the current that it will be a proper fit, since the max the gap would be is 0.078, and the minimum would be 0.04. But i was thinking could it be possible that the valve is already depressed and therefore the gap is -?

how do you manage to measure a minus valve clearance? you need to set them correctly or the big will run terribly, if at all!

      Hi,

I would encourage you to obtain a metric feeler gauge set, since these are metric bikes. Then READ THIS and keep us informed.

If my .04mm feeler gauge does not fit, I swap in the next smaller size shim and re-measure. I like running on the loose end of spec, sometimes a little over.

Note: DO NOT turn your engine if there are any shims missing from any buckets.

      Thank you for your indulgence,

Tkent had a good suggestion in a similar thread the other day: if you can spin the bucket with your finger try going down one size and then remeasure, if the bucket won't spin, try going down two sizes.

It's amazing how few GS's get regular valve adjustments. Once the clearance goes to zero the valves will burn and destroy the engine. Sad way to go when adjusting the valves is so easy.
