What should be replaced while the motor is apart?

Currently my motor looks like this:

While it is apart, what should I replace? Currently Im thinking piston rings, valve seals, Gaskets (duh!). Im going to drop the oil pan just to make sure there isnt any crud in the bottom and make sure there isnt any dirt/debris that has gotten in there.

Suggestions? Locations to buy said parts?

Parts are as close as your local dealer Or one of the many online vendors. Maybe add replacing the cam chain guides...

Replace everything so you don't have to do it again in the near future.
I just finished mine . Pistons , rings , valve guides/seals , timing chain/guides , tensioner and I also replaced the exhaust bolts with studs .
Goodluck old mate . Mine fired first time and pulls like a teenage schoolboy .

      Cheers,Simon .

I think that covers it....I'd give the cylinders a light honing too.

Sounds like you got it. I'd measure all the parts before dumping money it though. The cylinder and valves/guides could be worn. It's cheaper to purchase a low mileage head/cylinder on ebay than to recondition those parts at a machine shop - although that's the preferred method if you are going to keep the bike long term.

cyclepartsnation.com and/or partshark.com are a couple of the cheaper places to order parts - although sometimes they gouge on shipping so shop around to get the best price.

          Good luck

          To measure is to know.

Unless you like spending money down the road, why not go ahead & split the cases & change all the crank & trans seals, along with a new cam chain, & a head rebuild. With a cylinder hone & new rings, all of the above pretty much makes for a new engine that should go 70-100,000 miles with good maintenance. Ray.

Hmmm..... WHY is it apart in the first place? And what are your intentions, ie, drag racing / road racing, or just a rider, or somewhere in between?

I'm not a "do it because you're in there" type. I mean, it only takes a Saturday to get the motor right back to that state of disassembly again, so from my perspective, I'd rather spend the money LATER rather than NOW.

Within reason, of course. I mean, if you KNOW of an issue (like, it was smoking or clanking or something before you took it down) or if you DISCOVER an issue as you go (like stuck rings or metal shavings in the oil, then, you do what ya gotta do.

              Just my two cents.

Do what NEEDS to be done

I agree with kirkn. If there was a specific problem that warranted disassembly of your motor, then replace what needs to be replaced and any obvious problems. While its apart I would inspect everythign to be sure the wear of the moving parts is within tolerances for your model of bike. Then go off of that. Why replace parts that may have plenty of life left in them? just my worthless 2 cents.
