Tap tap... Tap tap... ????? Help!

I have a gs650gl. I finally got it started today after nearly a month of reassembling. All seems good. Got it running sweetly and cleanly. Pulls well as well.

However... I have a noise like a spanner being tapped against the crank case in groups of two. "Tap Tap...tap tap... Tap tap" it does seem louder on the left although it's difficult to hear exactly where it's coming from. It increases speed with revs but not as much when under load. Besides that though the bike actually goes just fine and seems to be very smooth. Any ideas guys and gals?

Does this tap tap occur in a rythmic pattern, once every several revolutions of the engine?

Yea very much so! The spaces between the two taps and between the next two are equal.

My buddy's 750 does this, we have narrowed it down to one spot on the cam chain. As it goes around, tap tap. We couldn't figure out why, couldn't see any kinks in the chain or anything. It seems to run fine, hasn't failed yet.

There are chains with master links, just the valve cover needs to come off.

How will I see if it's knackered? More to the point how will I replace it? Lol

The gap between each set of two is nearly 1 second! Plus dosnt do it cold only when warming up and when fully warm?!?

                    Sounds just like this 750.

Just separate the old chain, put the master link through it and the new chain, carefully pull it through. Read about it in a manual first so you don't mess up the cam timing.

Or just let it tap tap.

Ok fair does! Star! Many thanks! it does look to be that but If it does turn out to be anything else at any point I'll let you know so you can sort your mates. I'll take it for a spin tomorrow and see if it explodes lol :-) not ridden it anywhere yet other than up and down my road for testing.

I had the same tik-tik-tik.........tik-tik-tik.......tik-tik-tik...... earlier Only when it's warmed up. Now, after a cyl head rebuild I tested it yesterday when it was very hot outside and it got worse and worse as it warmed up. Usually it is just a quiet tik...tik....tik but yesterday... wow.
so I may need to change the chain? Any advice how to open the old chain? I was going to do a check and cleaning on the tensioner too...
