81 GS1100 running badly after top end job
Hey there, I just got finished rebuilding the top end on my 81 GS1100 and it started right up and will sustain an idle but it just seems to be not rersponding right to the throttle from the bottom of the rpm range. I have only ridden it around the block so far and won't take it over 4000 rpms per the factory manual but once it hits about 3000 it really wants to take off like everything is normal. I also rebuilt the carbs with the help of Robert Barrs O-ring kit. It is bone stock and all the airbox componenets are in place and not leaking. Carbs are not leaking at all and I did separate them completely and soaked each carb body in heated solution! I am certain they are not the issue. Is it normal for them to run not quite right after a top end rebuild? I have hooked up my Carbtune Pro sync guage and at 1750 RPM's like the manual also says they are spot on! If you need additional info please let me know! Any help would be greatly appreciated!Tags: None

I removed the valves and re lapped them in and also replaced the valve seals as well. I even took them out a second time because I leak tested them with some carb cleaner and a few of them would barely let some by. I am almost certain they are fine! Cam timing was correct according to the factory manual. I even had to do that twice because the first time the chain was not on the crank gear right. I also set the valve clearances to .004 on both intake and exhaust valves exactly like the factory manual shows it to be done.

I just replaced cams and rockers in my motor. I checked the cam timing 4 times, the first three were wrong. I am not the sharpest marble in the bag, but count those pins on the camchain one more time. Nessism is very good at reading between the lines and if he thinks there is a problem in the timing, I would give it one more look...

I'd go along with cam timing but also worth checking that you did remember to put the pilot air jets and the pilot jet blanking rubbers in the all the carbs.79 GS1000S
