    1983 GS450 Grip Question

    Hi all,

    Back again.

My latest project is replacing the stock handlebars on my 1983 GS450L. I received a set of Daytona bars from Z1 and "placed" them on the bike. They feel good so I want to complete the conversion. I have the original bars hanging at this point. I have a grip question or two.....

My stock grips are in need of replacement anyway, so I will probably just remove them silently and quickly.

Will I need to carefully remove and save the inner plastic throttle grip mount? (This is the part that the actual rubber grip slides on to), or will this be included with a new replacement grip set? Mine is not coming off easily, but if I need to keep it I will.

I am prepared to do any cable/brake line conversions necessary as well, so any input involving a 1983 GS450L that this work has been preformed on would be appreciated!

    Thanks as always!

    I second this question!

I am going to order bars in the next week or so and want to get new grips while I'm at it...

You will need to reuse the hard plastic inner piece. Loosen the throttle cable at both ends, remove both screws on the right hand switch assembly and separate the two pieces. Then you will be able to remove the cable from the throttle grip and remove the throttle grip. You can now work on it on your workbench.
You can use a razor blade to help remove the rubber, you are going to replace the grips anyhow. You will most likely also have to replace the cables with shorter ones, since the longhorn cables will now be too long. Most likely cables from a 450E will work just dandy.

        Thanks Koolaid,

Any thoughts on the mirrors and the master cylinder?

I just picked up the necessary cables for the shorter conversion. I did order the ones from a GS450E.

The mirrors are now closer in towards the center and it is hard to use them. The master cylinder is also at a much steeper angle. I had a question about this answered in the brake part of the forum but I was wondering if anyone elso has gone through this.

        Thanks, Mark
