engine rattle

OK folks....I've got a nasty rattle in my gs 1000. I've checked the clutch, starter clutch, cam chain and tensioner and had the cams out to measure the journals. Everything is well within factory specs. This leads me to the sometimes mentioned "cam walk". Has anybody ever actually seen and repaired this problem ?

Did you check the springs in the back of the clutch?

Try leaning the bike on the center stand. If it is the clutch springs rattling, it will be louder withe bike leaned, which tips the oil away from the clutch plate,and causes rattling springs to be louder.

Mine does the same thing. I'll try that leaning over trick, but it sound s little dangerous to try by myself. It runs perfectly, but that ticking drives me nuts.

..............yes, I've tried leaning the bike over, but the rattle is still the same. Once again...has any one ever actually diagnosed "cam walk" or do we need to call in Myth Busters ? On one of the posts about cam walk, someone mentions that someone did some machining to remedy the problem. Any ideas about who did this ?
This rattle sounds really bad..........although it goes away at 2500 RPM......and I'd really like to fix it. It would also help A LOT of GS owners with "rattle" problems.

The symptoms for the excessive camshaft end float problem are as follows:

1. The noise appears only at idle when the engine has been thoroughly warmed up.
2. The noise does not appear at idle when the engine has first been started from cold.
3. The noise does not appear when the engine is driven hard.
4. The noise disappears above 1500 revs.

So if you have these exact symptoms then you have excessive end float on your camshafts.

Thanks for this posting, I recently have noticed my '82 1100E is exhibiting these same symptoms, I was going to post this same question.

Am I understanding this correctly though that it is not something that will kill my engine if I don't act immediately?

I just don't want to create more problems for myself by not taking care of early symptoms.
