    head gasket orientation

Can someone let me know which side of a head gasket is the top side?

The gasket has metal rings for each cylinder top which are flush on one
side and proud on the other. Is the flush side the top or the proud side?

    For which model?

IIRC, the one I saw for a 16 valve 750 was marked "UP". So, you install it so "UP" reads correctly. If it's for another model, it may not have an up or down.

If you're not using an OEM gasket, you have my sympathy...

      This is for a 1982 550.

As you guessed this is not an OEM gasket but I've
used OEM in the past and I vaguely recall a "TOP"
marking. I just can't remember which side was marked.

The OEM gasket had the spacer rings in it just like
the one I have now and I have a feeling the flush side
of the gasket mates which the head while the spacers
mate up against the piston sleeves.

Why not use an OEM? I'm curious to see how well the
cheap (NE) brand will work and I got time to do it over.
