an 83 1100E has a welded crank also...
      get it now?
i got it the first time fella.... but thanks for reitterating the point. certainly helps clarify the last 26 years of my owning various GSX motors in various states of tune

this site refers to quite a different bike when quoting GS1100E compared to UK sites where THAT would be a GSX1100ES (or an E[insert another letter here]). an 1100E in the UK is an 1100ET esentially and didn't have a factory std welded crank wheras the ES, Katana SD etc motors did. fyi there are also oilway differences on the smaller tapered crank in addition to rods, welding, rotor size etc. all in all a great factory crank. of it's time it was certainly katana SD followed by the 83 ES

      you said...
the only plus to the 83 katana crank is the 493 rods
to which i replied the crank was also a good part... that's all i was getting at and you appear to have read so far into it.........

...... anyway, this conversation is fast becoming a "i know more than you" scenario of which i gracefully bow out of... at least ray sees what it is i'm saying. so, well done you win lol

      simples innit

      get it

        i'm in the US.
the person who started this thread is in the US.
the bike in question is a US model 83 1100E.
you stated "a welded crank is not a bonus..lol"
an 83 1100E has a factory welded crank..
for a street bike i'd rather have the large taper crank over the little wider beams of the kat 493 rods and small taper.
ray's statement was about removing the magnet which wouldn't work very well for a street bike..he was being a funny guy.
        thats my only point.
        no more/no less.
        can we still be friends

Maybe we need a translator, or a lookup conversion table. I'm pretty sure the US stuff is correct not sure about the UK stuff though. Do you UK guys use the same manual that is hosted at Cliff's website or is there another (99500-39012-03E)? The designations are all listed there for US models.

          Year US UK
          1980 GS1100ET GSX1100ET (silver/ small end)
          1981 GS1100EX GSX1100EX (silver/ small end)
          1982 GS1100EZ GSX1100EZ (silver/ small end)
          1983 GS1100ED/ESD GSX1100ED/ESD (black /big end /welded)
          GS1100SD GSX1100SD (black/ small end /welded/493)
