    Head swap - GS1000 onto GS850 motor

    Hi Everyone!
This is my 1st post, though I've lurked here a while. Thanks to everyone for creating a great community and resource for fans of the GS bikes!

I have 1983 GS850G with a burnt valve. I also just found an ad for a freshly rebuilt head from a 1978 GS1000. Does anyone know if this will work on my bike? If not, could you suggest a range of years and displacements that would make for a compatible donor?

If there is a list of these, I apologize in advance. I did look around, but did not find what I was looking for.

    Thanks in advance!

    Not going to fit.
I have 850 parts if you need them, valves, heads, etc.

The 78 is a small port head so your carbs will not fit to start with. A used head should be easy to find. Make sure to replace the valve guide seals while it is apart

Just cut your losses and replace the burnt valve. Have the seats recut and valves faced and put it back together with new valve guide seals and put it back together. No need for another head unless there is something you haven't told us about.

New Wrinkle "lifter" stuck on valve

          Hi folks,
I took your advice, and took the head to the machine shop. The (experienced) machinist was able to disassemble all but one of the valves from the head. On the burnt one, the lifter/cup will not disengage from the retainer.
Have any of you encountered this? If so, can you recommend what to do to unstick it?
          Thanks in advance!

Sounds like someone forgot to adjust the valves. Shame.

How about a magnet on the bucket to grab hold if it? Drill a hole though (not on the center though) and grab on to it that way? The buckets are easy to find, I have a bunch of spares if you need one.
