Hub spline opinions

I'm after your opinions here. Since I started reading Kerrfunk's thread about replacing his I've been worried. So this afternoon I pulled the rear wheel on my 82 GS850GL, and here's what I found.







Obviously, I haven't cleaned up the drive side yet. As you can probably see, it was dry. Anyway, whatcha think? Park it until I can replace the hub spline? Is it OK to ride for a while? Maybe replace it the next time I get a tire? Also, should I lube the 6 studs that slide into the hub?

I'd say lube it up and ride it gently while you look for a replacement.
Maybe not head out on any round the world tours on it.
It is definitely worn, but they wear a lot more before they fail.
Big burnouts and wheelies may not be a good idea at this point.

Thanks, tkent02 and tom203. Much appreciated. I put her back together with liberal amounts of Bel-Ray assembly grease. The nearest shop didn't carry any other moly lubes and I'd read on ADVrider or some such that the BMW guys like the Bel-Ray on their splines. Better than dry. Test ride tomorrow morning!

Better than dry not as good as the Moly 60. Better order up some to go with your new spline.

Last time I bought some grease I purchased some moly U joint grease under the Polarris brand

My guess is you have thousands of miles between now and absolutely nothing.

Translation: locate a used or new hub, and replace it this winter. Can't hurt to keep the old one around, just in case. It's still functional. My old one will be going for scrap metal sometime soon.

I still have my first fried airplane piston as an ashtray, nobody has smoked around here for years. It just kind of sits there.

That's the plan. She'll need new tires before next spring's inspection anyway. I guess I'll replace it the next time the wheel is off.

Alright, I threw it in a drawer with an unused oil filter, a ruptured clutch cable, and the shattered pieces of my last windshield, and it'll probly stay there til I move.
