    clutch basket spacer removal

    I kept meaning to tell all about my latest aquisition but my camera broke a few months ago and we still have not replaced it so....

    I bought a 79gs1000 engine and I am in the process of getting it ready to swap with my 750 engine.

    The engine has a 1085 kit, backcut tranny gears, welded and trued crank and a heavy duty basket. I am in the process of verifying some of this info. All of this was done about 15 years ago but was never installed. Should be a really nice upgrade...

    Since it spent a lot of time in a carport it did have some corrosion. I have spent alot of time cleaning and polishing it up, doing the valve shims and getting it ready for paint. I did do the primer paint yesterday.

    My dilemna is that I can't remove the spacer to get the clutch basket out to inspect the springs and see if it was really modified. Plus I thought I would be able to see the crank better that way too. I have put the small 6 mm bolts/screws in the holes but the spacer will not pull out. Do I need to use some sort of puller? The manual makes it sound like you just pull on the bolt with your hand and it comes out. It all turns nicely.

    Pull harder, maybe lift up on the clutch hub at the same time. That spacer should pull out fairly easily or something is wrong.

      Thanks Ed. Sorry I should have said that I even tried putting two bolts in and then putting my vice grips on the bolts and pulling. It seems to be really stuck in there and I not sure if I should just leave it alone or if that is going to cause problems down the road....

      I really wanted to check the springs in the back and see if it was welded.

        Something's wrong Dave. Sorry the bike is fighting you. I'm not sure what to suggest other than maybe rotating the engine/hub 180 degrees to see if that helps. Maybe something is bent causing the binding.

          make a minny slide hammer type of thingy.
          take a piece of chain and attach it with the bolts and larger washers.
          put a piece of pipe through the other end of the chain and add some slack in it and pull hard to make it snap.
          think about what i'm saying and improvise a solution.
          it will come out.

            Thanks to both of you. I will try both suggestions. Good idea on the "slide hammer type of thing". I was wishing I had one.

            I would really like to check it out and make sure all is well before I put this thing in.

              Well I tried the slide hammer thingy. (Technical term) Used a few brackets and some C clamps. I wish I had a camera to show you my lovely setup. I yanked on that thing a bunch of times. I had to keep my feet against the side of the motor since I am doing all this on the floor. If I didn't know this thing was supposed to come out... Would not budge at all.....Not sure if I should just leave it alone or not....

                ok,
                you need to try and get the basket to spin away from the sleeve spacer.
                if they turn a part then your spacer is stuck"welded" to the large grooved washer that is behind it.
                damn strange man!

                  Penetrating oil and more penetrating oil.
                  Shoot these baskets run on bearings never seen one stuck before.

                    I was able to hold the spacer with the screws in it and then turn the engine and then the basket will turn counterclockwise when I rotor the engine clockwise. I assume this is normal.

                    The spacer seems to be stuck on the shaft. The roller bearings on the outside of the spacer seem to be moving normally.

                    Having not dealt with this before I am not sure exactly what it might be stuck to behind the basket.

                      Sounds to me like the spacer is frozen to the input shaft. Thats a lot of surface area. If penetrating oil and a slide hammer wont free it up, just leave it for now and finish putting the motor together. If you are just curious, pull the basket forward until it is against the cases and use a mirror to look behind it. If the rivets are welded, I would say it has a HD basket in it. Maybe a few heat cycles will free it up later.......Billy

                        I have been spraying it with deep creep but due to the grooves on the shaft it is hard to get it on the areas where it is making contact with the spacer. I will keep spraying. Tommorrow I am gonna borrow another puller from a friend used to remove a steering wheel.

                        This engine had been sitting for awhile....but everything else turns freely

                          Just looked back there as best I could with a mirror. I could see the rivets are not welded but it does have some thick and some thin springs. Not sure if anything is different or not from the normal basket.

                            Did you try moving the basket inward toward the trans and outward toward the cover??? Did you try rotating the basket left and right ?? How much does it move. If it wont go in and out, the large needle bearing is bad. If the basket goes left and right just a slight amount (about 1/4"), than the basket is probably fine. Sounds like a stock basket to me.....Billy

                              Some thick & some thin springs is the same as stock....

                              Most upgraded ones have the same spring in each slot (A lot of the time they seem to be green too... ) & welded rivets.
