    The chain guides can be removed as you tear down the top end -sorry

      i dont mind taking cams off, timing is not a problem, do i need to take the head off or will they come out with just cams removed?

        On my 82 gs650 i know the front guide can be removed with the cam cover taken off. it kind of pulls out from the top. The rear guide is not so easy. i believe the rear is held in place by a steel rod at the bottom end of the guide. that rod resides in between the top and bottom halves of the crankcase. Its held in place inside of two grooves in the top crankcase half by the bottom crankcase capping off those grooves. I imagine that it would be very similar with your bike.
