Engine stopped and puff of smoke from under gas tank

Was out on a long ride yesterday and stopped at a light a few blocks from my house and had the bike in neutral and the engine just died and then a puff of black smoke came out under the gas tank, on the left side.

I did not try to restart the bike, I just pushed it to the curb. There was a smell almost like really old burnt rubber. But she started right up and I rode home no problem. When I got home the exhaust had more white smoke than normal and the small from the engine area was still pretty strong. I was late for an appt and did not have time to look closely while it was hot but I figure I will pull the tank and look closely, externally for anything burnt. Maybe something in the cylinder blew, like a ring? Still seemed to have OK power. I need to do a compression check obviously.

Any ideas on what to try?

    Thanks!

Well, I had just replaced/fabricated and installed a new mounting for my regulator so I better start looking there!
