Starter Clutch

Well, the weather's finally gotten cool enough to spend more than five minutes at a time in the garage, so I'm finally getting around to pulling all the engine covers again, and sealing up all the little leaks. I received one of those new fangled iPhone 4's for my birthday, and decided to take advantage of it's great little camera. Here's a quick video of me spinning the starter gear, on the crankshaft. It's only supposed to spin freely in one direction, correct? I get zero play when I try to spin it the other way, it looks like I'm just stopping it in the video, but I'm actually attempting to spin it in the opposite direction.

How's it sound? You can hear the noise it makes when it spins freely, counterclockwise. Is that my low end knock?

Sounds to me as if one of the springs has gone awol or is very weak (or something else has busted in there). I'd pull it apart for a look at least.

I didn't think there should be that sorta noise in there.

Anyone know where I pick up a puller for this? I know there are different ones, but I've not really looked into what bits are for what crankshafts. I've got to order a few rubber bits for the fuel system as well. I'm going to just pull the trigger and buy the starter clutch anyways. I've replaced just about everything else on the bike at this point, might as well keep up the habit. In the event everything looks hunky dory, I can just stick it in the drawer with the rest of my spare bits.

Hey Turtle, sounds to me like one of the starter clutch bolts has sheared off, and the head is rubbing the gear. I would pull it apart first and then order parts......Billy

I just bought all the small bits. If I have to take something apart, I usually just replace everything. So I've got new clutch bits and new bolts on the way, along with the puller.
