1983 GS1100L dies out high speeds

Hello all just bought my frist bike it is a 83 gs1100L but over the last month of having it i have been having an issue where the bike starts kinda like sputering and chocking up at first it was at like 90 but now it is getting worse and more often now it seams to do it 60 and up. sometimes it just needs to sit for like 5 mins other times i can just chock it all the way and play with the throttle till i get it in the right place and just sit there and rev it all over and than in time it starts to run smoother again. if anyone has the time to think about this and let me know there thoughts that would be awesome. I love the bike but it sucks when a few friends and i go out and i keep getting left behind.

    Greetings and Salutations!!

    Hi Mr. Smithben1983,

I'm glad you've joined us. Unfortunately, we have very little history about your bike. The standard procedure is to go through the carbs, the charging system, the brakes, etc, and get all the systems up to par. It's all in your mega-welcome. Let me share some GS lovin'.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....

Here is your very own magical, mystical, mythical, mind-expanding "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", the Carb Rebuild Series, and the Stator Papers. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

It's 27 years old and unless you personally knew the mechanic that maintained this bike, you have to plan on getting real familiar with it- before you get stranded in the boonies with your friends long gone. Go to Basscliff's site and start absorbing info, especially the top ten common issues.

had a similar problem after the mechanic shop worked on the bike (but that's maybe not related to the problem).
Try to put the fuel petcock onto the RESERVE (RES) position instead of ON -that kind of worked for me...
now that I'm thinking about it...still running only on RES after all those years...have to really solve that problem for good
