    ALT COVER Question

I am new to these bikes
    I have a 1980 GS 850
it was a basket case I have to motor together and in the frame putting side covers on, blah blah blah
My question is this the Left hand cover for the ALT I see the Oil passage is right there and not plugged off as there is also a Oil galley from the head is the Alt bathed in Oil or should there be a rubber plug at the end of the oil passage I don’t see one in the parts break out but just want to know before I proceed further down the road
    thanks

It's supposed to be full of oil, it is designed that way to cool the stator.

Be sure you do these 4 things

          1. Washer inside idler gear
          2. washer outside idler gear
          3. Gasket for cover
          4. Route the wiring up thru the starter hole 1st, then install cover
          1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
          1978 GS 1000 (parts)
          1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
          1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
          1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
          2007 DRz 400S
          1999 ATK 490ES
          1994 DR 350SES

            cover

-while on the topic of this cover. I have just finished putting my engine
back together. I took my time and did everything very carefully.
My bike (1979 gs550E) has been on the center stand and everything is good so far. I put it on the side kick-stand this week and oil leaked out of the bottom of the left hand cover quite steadily. (a drip every 10 seconds). A new gasket had been used with no silicone or gasket spray etc. The correct amount of oil was put in the engine. When I put the bike back on the center stand, no more leak. Is this cover known for leaking? Do I simply take the cover off and do it over with another new gasket? Should I use some Black Sealant as well?
            Thanks
            Bill

Obviously tilting the bike to left raises oil level in stator cover, so assuming your cover doesn't have a pinhole leak, you either didn't get old gasket off 100% or the gasket moved slighty during reassembly. If you use a little sticky stuff on one side of gasket, it has a better chance of staying in place during assembly.

The only time mine ever leaked was when I did not get all of the old gasket off
