So lump me in with the confused crowd. In order to change those springs on the back of the clutch, we need to grind off those rivets and have the backing plate welded back on?

        You're not confused at all.

The fun comes in when trying to get the back plate down flat with the spring shims in place. http://www.theflyingbanana.com/clutchhub.htm

Okay, okay - now I'm all caught up.

Always did want to learn to weld. How much would it cost for a TIG-welding setup, ya think?

If thats all your going to weld just find a local shop.... Now that I have been reading all this about the clutch noisees !!! Damm it's too cold (9 deg today) to start her up. When spring comes and I bring it out for some fresh air I'm gonna have to listen real close now!

The last time I took it out (with the new clutch springs and recently replaced clutch fibers) it worked great. Great info and it does look like a fairly easy repair. One question I have is (mine might look different) how many and what type of springs do you replace them with, My basket only had (4)..

A new tig welding setup will cost you about $800 or more..... Gas is expensive (you need argo-shield) & it takes a lot of practice.

I can Mig, Gas, Arc & Tig weld but I probably wouldn't be very good with the Tig these days, out of practice. Mig is the easiest (It was designed for Women - well actually it was designed for making bombs in WW2 with unskilled labour, in the UK the bomb makers were mostly women as the men were away at war....) Arc is probably 2nd easiest but also the hardest to get a nice cosmetic finish. Gas is probably easier to get a nice finish as you can "push" & work the metal with the torch more than with any other type.

If you do a college course you could prob make it one of your "projects"

Cost me $25 to have a welder do mine (I clamped it etc). Said he'd be interested in doing more but he's California.
