rebuild?
my 82 gs 110 has about 24000 miles and was having some stupid little issues last year one of which is the base gasket leaking oil by cyls. question is think its time for a complete tear down? im super swamped at work and was wordering if anyone on here does repairs/ rebuilds on complete motors? im going on a trip in a couple months for work and would love to take it with me to cali. but 70+ hours a week just isnt leaving me time to pull motor down. at the very least i want a new base gasket and ring set along with valve sealsTags: None

Shipping a 200 lbs engine is expensive so you might want to consider finding someone local. And speaking of local, where are you located? If you are in So. Calif, or can deliver the engine, I'd be glad to help.Ed
To measure is to know.

I doubt you need anything more than a simple bottle brush hone job, new rings, lap the valves, and new top end seals. The GS bottom ends are very durable. Some GSR local should be able to help.Ed

i know this but like ive stated just have no time for this. it runs and rides right now but the main issue is the oil leak from base gasket

If you want a temporary fix(yet sort of permanent)
You can use some RTV to stop the leak.
It has stopped all of mine for over a year now.
I would only consider doing an engine rebuild if your motor has lost Compression, or you blew a piston, valve, or something that require you pull the Cylinder Head off.
I mean I'm NOT sure if I read your post correctly......but just a Base Gasket is leaking right?
I would check the bolts for the proper torque specs, then if that checks Out.......RTV it!
Save the rebuild for later.......if there's one thing I learned, it's NOT to rush an engine rebuild or any motor work.....because it always takes longer and ends up costing more than you think!Last edited by Guest; 01-03-2011, 04:09 PM.

Oh, wasn't capitalized, so didn't catch it :P
In any case, I don't know anyone in Michigan. If you are willing to spend the money to have it shipped though, you may as well spend a little money on, say, a valve job, new guides, maybe a little porting...
Can't think of anyone better for that than Mike Rieck in Boston.
If you are interested, let me know, I'll give you his contact information.

Wait a minute; the base gasket is leaking a little oil so you are going to do a complete overhaul? But you don't have time to do it yourself. But you have time to take the engine out of the frame (which is a formitable task) and build a crate and ship it across the country then reinstall it.
Unless oil is squirting out, just ride it until you have time to fix it yourself.
