    Cylinder Rehab

I'm currently removing the last of the base gasket and will wash, prep for paint, and lube tomorrow.

Is there a good technique for removing the Cylinder O rings?

They seem pretty brittle and are fused in the gap pretty tight.

    Thanks.

I have only done this a couple of times, I think I either used a pointy scribe or a razor blade.

Use a plastic scraper.. That may just be a carbon buildup. Did you check the bottom of the cylinders for the O rings

Run a small screwdriver around the groove and it will break up and come out as you work your way around the cylinder.

I have an L shaped pick. It came in a set of 4 sold at just about any auto store. Pick at it until you break it and lift one end at the break. Run the pick beneath the ring as you advance around the cylinder. When the end is long enough, pull gently on it while you continue to break it free with the pick. They don't just pop right out, but it isn't difficult either.

I have the new orings. It's more a matter of getting the old ones out. My gasket scraper doesnt get onto the grove. Just wanted to know what people used to clean out the ring grooves is all.

Got the cylinders cleaned up and lubed.

                    Honed.

Gasket surfaces cleaned. Residue scoured off with 3m pad.

Base gasket was a pain. Slipped once and made a very shallow groove.

That is outstanding work!! Don't worry about the gouge. It isn't deep enough to make a difference and it isn't butting up against an edge. My head has a number of tiny gouges from being worked over by a PO. I'll have to see if I can get pics of mine up soon. The cylinders are finished but the head awaits.

hey, what exactly is the purpose of those cylinder o rings? Mine looked good, until I basically melted them with paint stripper when I was prepping my cylinder bank for paint. I need new ones. I foud them on a few sites for about $5.oo each.
Are there off the shelf ones available at average autoparts stores, for a buck or two each or do I really have to spend 25 bucks to have 4 shipped to me? And once again, what is their function exactly? When I removed mine after the melting incident, a fair amount of oil came out from between the steel sleeve itself and the cylinder bank. is that normal?

They are supposed to act as a seal to prevent oil from moving up between the sleeves and the cylinder block. I didn't really have any oil back behind the o-rings when removed so I guess they did their job.

                          $ 2.98 each

I know you're way past that stage, but to remove those o-rings, put some brake cleaner on them and go have coffee. When you get back, they will have softened sufficiently to come out in one piece.

One other thing for what it's worth to all of you, I always pull the old orings & have NEVER put them back! NEVER had an issue either. For what it's worth. Ray.
