Cam Chain Tensioner Question - GS550E

Should I be able to move the cam chain tensioner adjuster knob freely on my 80 GS550E counter clockwise? I know it shouldn't move clockwise but I'm wondering if it is stuck.

    Thanks,

Yes, it should be possible to move it one way but not the other (I don't remember which is which right now),
but you definitely do NOT want to try it while the engine is running.

Agree with Steve, yes you should be able to rotate the knob anti clockwise when the motor is not running.

Correct, I never move it when the bike is running but when shut off I cannot rotate the tensioner knob counter clockwise. The reason I ask is I'm getting a vibration/noise when cruising down the road and it sound like a loose chain.

Are you saying that you cannot turn the knob clockwise or anti clockwise?

Has your tensioner been rebuilt lately? If not it could be gummed up and not moving freely.

If it is the camchain then it is a bit of a pain to get the tensioner off the engine to rebuild it as the carbs need to be removed first.

If you have a vibration I would check the tune of the engine first, ignition timing, spark plugs, synch the carbs, check cam timing, shim the valves, etc. Any of these things including the carbs being out of balance can cause vibration.

Is the vibration at a particular rev range?
