i was messing around on the dunlop tire site tonight looking at rubber for the back of my almost completed 81 GS850 hardtail and i decided to click similar year range bikes with bigger motors. i came across an 87 CV1400 that has a moderately wider rim and an 87 VS1400 that has a significantly wider rim! i did a little research and both bikes are shaft driven, and both bikes are disk brake.
this is where i need a little bit of help. from what i can see in the pictures the way the final drive mates to the rear rim looks identical as my 850 does. was there some sort of universal final drive unit (aside from gearing because i have read that that fluctuates a little bit amongst models) that suzuki was using? i can't find any pictures detailed enough to count grooves online of either bikes, but i bet someone on here knows something!
the plan here is to be able to squeeze a little more beef under the back of this bike before i settle with my little 130 on the stock 2.75" cast rim. i have the width in the new hard tail rear section, and there is no protective cover over the shaft anymore as i did away with the swing arm completely, so that should have bought me more than enough space to squeeze a 170 or 180 back there without rubbing on anything... and the VS1400 rim happens to be a 4.00" wire spoke design which should be able to accommodate that nicely. would my GS850 final drive unit mate to a VS1400 rim?! and if not, any qualms with running the entire drive unit and rim from an intruder as a unit that anyone can think of?
any help would be greatly appreciated!
