    Gaskets

    Ok, So I am looking to replace the clutch, the stator, the ignition cover, and the valve cover gaskets. I have heard only bad things about trying to cut my own out of gasket paper at home and school, and have heard a lot against the permatex gasket makers on here.

    Basically where would be the best (recommended) places to get these gaskets? I have been to a few of the sites in BassCliff's welcome letter and at the end of the search, they all come to the same page where I pick the part from a picture and match it to a number blow the diagram. The prices on some are decent, but the shipping prices would make it more worth it to run over to Bert's Mega Mall and place an order with them.

    Are there any recommendations about gaskets here, or should I get ready to fork over about $50.


    PS: how do I know which valve cover gasket to get? From what I see there appears to be two PNs available.

    Just go to Bert's They will help you get the right Gaskets. Take the engine #s & frame vin with you The stator gasket is part of the clearance for the starter Idler gear so the thickness is important. The 650? I think has the tack drive in the cam cover so gasket thickness is important too !!!

      alright, gotta start saving up for them.

      just for future reference, the engine # is halfway hidden by the clutch cable near where it says '2500mL'?
      and the frame vin is the 17 digit code behind the headlight?

      (sorry, Im still trying to figure out the terminology.)

          I've cut my own gaskets before for the stator cover from common gasket paper. It's easy as long as you have an old gasket to use as a template. You can make the holes with a paper hole punch. Just measure the thickness of the old gasket and match it to the gasket paper at an auto parts store - get the gasket material that is safe with oil. I've never tried a clutch cover gasket but it looks easy from the photo in the parts fishe. Valve cover gasket is way harder, don't think I'd even try.

            Hi,

            If you're just going to order a few parts then, yes, shipping can kill you. Ordering from Bert's will cost more per part but you'll pay no shipping so it's a wash, or you might even come out a little ahead. But on larger orders you can save some money with some smart shopping at the right online vendor.

            I ordered a part from Bert's once. It came out to be the same as if I would have ordered from cyclepartsnation.com, partshark.com, or other low price online OEM vendor. Whenever I place an order for something I just have to have, I usually order some extra gaskets and things I know I'll need eventually. It makes the shipping costs worthwhile, plus you have extra parts for when your friends need them.

            For your valve cover gasket, the difference is in the number of bolt holes. The later years used one or two more bolts in the valve cover. Just be sure to order the one with the same number of bolts. I think they changed in late '81 or '82.

              I would normally go that route, but I am currently on a really tight budget until I can pick up a job somewhere. my next purchase will be a valve cover gasket, and some cheap motor oil until I can afford the other 3 gaskets.

              I now see what you were talking about. one has a bolt that goes right through where my oil leak was. I wonder if the PO bought the wrong one and that was the reason for the busted gasket now.
