    Clutch plates

    I'm going to start rebuilding a 16v 750 engine soon....really.....I promise.....

    Anyway, this particular engine had, what I assume to be, a Barnett clutch pack in it. It was fine after the engine got warmed up, before that, it was next to impossible to get the thing into gear and shift. So, I want to replace it with the rebuild. I've searched part numbers, and it appears that the clutch fibers and plates for this engine are the same for the GS 400 up through the GS850, except for the GS450, for some reason. Since the fibers and plates are pretty tough, I'm going to take a chance and find a set on ebay or somewhere.

    Does this jive with what everyone else has experienced ?

    I put an EBC clutch in my 1100 way back when it was stock. It'didn't slip and I actually sold it and it's still working for somebody.
    Got the cutch fibers and springs for around seventy.
    1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

      I guess I was asking more of a compatibility question. Seems odd to me that the same fibers and steels were in so many different models.

        Larry,
        I checked the part numbers and you have it right; a bunch of different bikes share that part. Maybe the larger bikes have more plates? At any rate, you are safe to use plates from any of those bikes.

        BTW, I think I have some used clutch plates you can have. Any chance you can measure the outside diameter and shoot me a PM? Measure to the OD, but not to the end of the ears, or measure the ID, which may be easier.

          Thanks Ed. I'll measure them, but, it'll be a over the weekend. It's about 15 degrees today and I'm not trying to freeze anything off. It's warming up this weekend to around 35-40 degrees, so, I'll get to them then. I'll have to take a closer look, but, I think all I need is the 8 fibers and 8 steels. I have everything else.

            550/650/750/850 are the same.

              My sale is pending. I think you will find that the early years had thicker fibers and thinner steels, while the later models had thinner fibers and thicker steels.

                I've got something like four or five GS850 clutches lying around. You're welcome to come pick through the pile of fiber and steel plates. None are worn out.

                  Thanks guys, but, as it turns out, I don't need any clutch plates at all.

                  I have two of these engines for spares and the other one had a nice complete clutch pack in it. After spending some time in the garage today and doing an inspection of my situation, it's going to need some starter work, the ignition and then all the "normal" stuff.....a good cleaning, gaskets everywhere and I'm going to redo the top-end. I have another set of carbs and an exhaust. I'm planning on getting the complete package to run on an engine stand.
