    has anybody sanded down a valve shim to get a proper fit? did anybody have any long term success?

    let the education begin!

    Search for the shim club on here, a guy named Ray has a lapping machine made to do this, he'll send you the size you need, then you send him your old one.

      Hi,

      Hint: Look in the GS Parts and Services section.

      Thank you for your indulgence,

        The sanded / lapped side goes down since the surface hardening has been removed ??

            Far better to stick with stock shims and stock shim sizes.

            They are not that expensive. Check with your local Suzuki shop, see if they might have some sort of exchange policy. Some don't, others might charge a couple of bucks.

            The "GSR Shim Club" was mentioned. I know virtually nothing about them, except many members are happy with the arrangement.

            Next up the list is to just buy new shims from Z1 Enterprises at just over $5 a piece. You will have them in just a few days and can keep your old ones for future use.

              had the engine running with shims down to 1.60 mm, but logically,
              could not find replacement shims when doing my first valve adjustment.

              I was pointed out by other members, correctly, that as from a certain width (less than 1.85 mm I experienced) the shim is 'falling' into the bucket and the ridges of that bucket become a dangerous obstacle for the cams...

              so I had the little nib from the inside of the bucket drilled out (0.6 to 0.8 mm removed) and are now back in the normal 2.40 to 2.75 mm shims (that I ordered from Z1)

                  Actually, Ray doesn't have access to the lapping machine anymore. He's retired from the job that allowed him to use it. He does have shims to swap out yet though, but you have to contact him for sizes available. His handle is Ghostgs1 here on the GSR.

                    I'd suggested that a few times in the past but never had any feedback from someone who had actually done it. Glad to know it worked as intended

                      Dan,

                      Ray's one of those machinists that can't seem to quit - he bought his own machine, just made me a 1.95
