Problem with start and what are these wires for?

I have a 80 GS850. I dont know how to tell if it is a G or GL. I took off the tank and found a surprise underneath.

the two wires (black & yellow/black) are snipped off...?

not sure where those two wires go. i know the vacuum hose goes to the petcock. any suggestions?

Looks to be fuel gauge sending unit.

My bike-side wires match the take colors, and are right above the battery. Shouldn't be tough to find.

Those are your wires for your gas gauge. You will be on empty.....there's a couple more wires there that they connect to near the front of the seat.

Take a picture of the whole bike and we'll tell you what you have.

EDIT : Also, there no fuel pump, the gas is gravity fed.

If it looks cool, it's a G. Otherwise it's a GL

(I own an L BTW)

L's usually have:

1. Stepped seat
2. "chromed" fenders
3. Buck horn bars
4. Leading axle forks - the axle is actually in front of the fork instead of directly under it.

Of course your bike could have started life as an L, and have been "de-L'd" a bit. The buck horn bars are usually the first things to go.

One thing.. the previous owner painted the tank.. (NOT GOOD) and as well installed a Harley softail rear fender and tail light/license plate mounts and sportser seat as well..

just to keep that in mind.. was not my idea... LOL

The tank looks non-L. Forks, too - but he either painted the lowers or replaced 'em.

yes i do have a fuel guage.... and it has been frakenbiked... it is a little sad.. but i think i can get her back on track.

did a little.. used to race AMA. dont anymore... just getting back into it really.. had a 77 GS750 before.. now have the 80 GS850
