What are these side bolts for??? They were on the project GS1000 that I bought. All the other engines I have seen have no bolt there just flat machining.

These are the ends of oil passages that are normally plugged -- I think it's usually an aluminum plug epoxied into place from the factory.
Someone in the past must have had the cylinder head off and drilled out these plugs in order to better clean the passages. Then they tapped them and installed bolts.
Looks like a sign someone was paying attention when they worked on the bike. Treasure this -- it's a rare thing to see...1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Thanks guys. Very interesting. There is also a few on the front near the intake boots and some sort of disk glued near the intake with some type of markings. I still need to get it running good but I rebuilt the carbs and did the valves. Now I need to work on the gas tank etc.David
