1985 gs700e vacuum stuff i need help

i need some help on my 1985 gs700 motor,i see there's a hoes hoke up on one of the carbs,and there's a hoes hoke up on the breather on top of the motor,i dont know where they go to or what there for,and there's something below the carbs looks like it go into the head has a spring and it turns,i dont really know much about street bike motor just car motors....please send me sominfo on this thanks.

Hi,

That thing "below the carbs looks like it go into the head has a spring and it turns" is the cam chain tensioner. You'll find information about that on my website and on bwringer's website (there's a link to his website on mine).

What he said. Don't mess with the cam chain tensioner unless you know what you're doing. Could possibly alter your timing, smacking valves, and causing all kinds of miscontent in your engine.

The hose on top the carbs goes into the back of the fuel valve, or as some like to call it, the petcock. It is the vacuum supply that opens the fuel valve, supplying the carbs with gas.

The hose from the breather cover is, in fact, called the breather hose or breather vent. This should hook up to a big plastic nipple on top front of your airbox. If you still have an airbox.

Spend some time at Basscliffs site, more info there than you can digest in many many sittings.

thanks guys ,the motor is on a shifter cart frame i got my own fuel pump and stuff so i guess i need to plug off the breather and the hoke up on the carb?

Hi,

The breather hose at the top of the valve cover is necessary to equalize pressures inside and outside the engine. I would keep the breather hose and put a filter on the end of it. Something like this from Dennis Kirk:



Click the picture for more information. There are similar filters from other manufacturers.

Or you might want to fashion some kind of catch basin at the end of the breather hose to contain the oil vapor condensation.

Either way, let the engine breathe.

Yes, plug the hose from the carbs. Otherwise will run lean, I think?

i caped the carb hose hook up thing,runs better now,thanks.
