    Starved engine

So this has happened a couple times so far(As well as sometimes being a pain in the ass to start, I think also due to a starved engine).
Riding on the freeway, going about 75 in 6th, throttle most of the way open for about 7 or 8 minutes(4 or 5 miles). Bike was running for about 12 minutes total.
The bike will run as long as I don't let off on the throttle. It starts kinda lurching a little. When I give it less gas, it slows and won't rev higher. Right when the revs die(like from putting in the clutch), then the bike dies. If I pop the clutch the engine will be forced to run, but can't go faster.
I'm not sure which factor it is. It hasn't happened riding city speeds(Less than 55). Perhaps petcock not working? First time it died the choke was fully in, the second time mostly out.
When it died a passerby stopped and helped me. He said it sounded starved for fuel. After letting it sit for 10ish minutes it will start up again.
I can take a picture(Slash check) the position of the petcock and upload a video with sound if that might help.

I'm kinda at a loss. It happened at the same exact point on the freeway both times. Any suggestions or questions?
Its a 1980 GS550LT. 3rd gear doesn't work(Unless I keep the gas on the whole time, but right when i let off it pops out of gear). And I've run a bottle of carb cleaner fuel additive through it.
Planning a carb rebuild/clean this spring.

Is there anything special about this section of highway since you say it happens in that spot every time? Does it rise or dip sharply?

DO you ride that long at that speed anywhere else?

      Pinprick in a petcock diaphraghm?

I had a similar problem with my gs 750e. I found that the vaccum line from the carbs to the petcock was ruptured and thereby starving the engine.

          Hi,

Yes, I'm thinking along those lines too, vacuum issue, petcock problem, perhaps float level? Are you using an inline fuel filter?

          Thank you for your indulgence,

Nope. Flat, about a mile past a slight curve. Nothing special about it.

I have before. 55 along other sections.
I'm going to check my petcock this weekend. When does it switch?
Mine just has a flat notch, not like a handle I've seen on other bikes. Whenever I've looked at it, it looks like its pointing to prime. I meant to take a picture of it before, but I'll post one tonight.

Not that I'm aware of. I haven't had the bike long and haven't really gotten a chance to tinker with things.

Its coming in clear! This next week its supposed to be getting a bit warmer, so I'm hoping to get the chance to sit down with someone that knows carbs more than I do and get to cleaning.

Gosh You know I still think the prime positions smaller orifice can be a source of starvation. Prime draw from the reserve hole and there coud be blockage in the petcock as well.

                Oh well good luck.
