Riding on the freeway, going about 75 in 6th, throttle most of the way open for about 7 or 8 minutes(4 or 5 miles). Bike was running for about 12 minutes total.
The bike will run as long as I don't let off on the throttle. It starts kinda lurching a little. When I give it less gas, it slows and won't rev higher. Right when the revs die(like from putting in the clutch), then the bike dies. If I pop the clutch the engine will be forced to run, but can't go faster.
I'm not sure which factor it is. It hasn't happened riding city speeds(Less than 55). Perhaps petcock not working? First time it died the choke was fully in, the second time mostly out.
When it died a passerby stopped and helped me. He said it sounded starved for fuel. After letting it sit for 10ish minutes it will start up again.
I can take a picture(Slash check) the position of the petcock and upload a video with sound if that might help.
I'm kinda at a loss. It happened at the same exact point on the freeway both times. Any suggestions or questions?
Its a 1980 GS550LT. 3rd gear doesn't work(Unless I keep the gas on the whole time, but right when i let off it pops out of gear). And I've run a bottle of carb cleaner fuel additive through it.
Planning a carb rebuild/clean this spring.
