GS 850G shifting glitch
Occasionally my '81 GS 850G shifter doesn't completely return after a shift into 2nd making the transition to 3rd difficult. I'm curious as to how far into the bowels of this bike will I have to go to facilitate repairs. I have learned to live with the problem as it doesn't occur every time. Any suggestions?Tags: None

There is a return spring behind the clutch. Just follow the shifter shaft to the other side.
Very easy to replace.
I'd try cleaning it first.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

Interesting- I have the same problem as well.
You rekon its an easy fix- can you maybe desribe a bit more the repair, and what is needed in order to replace the spring? I will have a closer look when I return home this evening.
thanks

Here's an 850G with the clutch basket removed, showing the shifty bits at the bottom left of the photo:
With all that said, the problem may not be in the shifting pawls and return spring -- it's more commonly a bent shift shaft, or the shift shaft is hanging up due to dirt or corrosion where it passes through the gearbox cover (the part that would be a sprocket cover on a chain drive bike.)
There's no gasket or anything under the gearbox cover, so I'd remove the lever, remove that cover, and see if the problem becomes apparent.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Thanks , I am with you now.
seems like a real over engineered spring and shift pawl gear set!
will try give the shaft a clean in the area where it goes through the cover - like you suggested.
it doesnt happen all the time so- hopefully that is all what it will take.
also I don't ride the bike every day, which I know does go againts it.
cheers
