chain tensioner leak
If I crank my engine backwards to tighten the chain on the intake side, can I take out the lock screw without removing the tensioner? I need to replace the O ring. 1980 gs1100L. 16vTags: None

You don't need to turn anything backwards. The screw is not doing anything just sitting there anyway. The lock is only used to hold it all together when you replace the whole tensioner back into the engine, then you release the lock and set the locknut. Just take the lock screw out and put it back in with the new O ring. When you put it back in you don't want it tight enough to lock it. Go all the way in, back it out 1/4 or 1/2 turn or so, set the locknut.

I just ordered more tach cable seals (I seem to install three or four sets every summer on incontinent GSs, so I keep 'em around), and these are now about $11 a set.
